E.T.
replaces the absent father who’s gone to Mexico, unearthed from family. The
children reconnect with his benign side in the form of an extraterrestrial.
Mingled sadness and joy of nostalgia permeates our April holiday movie, as
E.T.’s whole purpose is to “phone home”. He becomes a California geek,
constructing a home-made astrophysical computer-radio device that communicates
with fellow (?) extraterrestrials. Human must change to learn from the Other,
E.T. Dogs connect quicker, then children. The boys’ friends meanly deride them,
then are stunned by the reality of E.T.’s atmospheric BMX flights. Others just
found it a ripping good yarn.
