Amplified handset ringtone, then announcement: “Patrons are requested to turn
on all mobile devices for the duration of the concerto.” Four movements. 1.
Performers onstage phone each other at select intervals. Ringtones create tonal
and rhythmic phases imitated by marimbas, bells, clapsticks. Woodwind continuo
evolves based on chance phrases. Conductor chooses moment for fade or crash. 2.
Silence until audience mobile service sounds: it could be march, waltz,
tintinnabulation. Owners free to reply: “Look I’m in the middle of a concert
right now.” &c. 3. Themes and variations on Apple iPhone, Nokia, Verizon a
cappella. 4. All instrument finale.
