Avian (April)

Photograph of a white faced heron taken at Wye River this April by Carol O'Connor

King parrot, young, lands on railing, no food, skedaddles. Sulphur-crested cockatoos, a flock in loose formation (is there any other kind?) between the sightline of decking and Wye’s river trees. Kookaburras, sudden laughter at unusual time, lunch hour. An ocean bird, large, skims over the water and goes, unidentified, let’s look in the book! A tiny honeyeater sits amidst the big banksia, eyeballs the valley, hops anti-clockwise around the tree. Heron and ‘elegant’ go together. Summer weather except it’s April, swallow-like birds swoop on river midges at nightfall, they might in fact be swallows. The owls are out there, somewhere.
