Selfishness (July)

When a Prime Minister says he will leave Parliament if he’s no longer Prime Minister, people decide it’s tactics. Quit is another favourite verb with the media. But others know it’s selfishness. Why, they think, it’s only July and already he talks of leaving. Self-interest is, granted, a motivation for much behaviour, but selfishness takes this to excess. In a society where people are left to drown at sea, where people are hidden who ask for our help, where we are all reduced to producers and consumers, selfishness is the norm. The Prime Minister isn’t there to render selfless service.
